To deal with the salty environment, mangrove plants have developed modified roots. In some species, the roots filter the incoming seawater. These modified roots also help to support the tree in the muddy substrate. The roots are considered a xeromorphic feature, a display feature that tends to conserve or retain water. These roots also provide oxygen intake by structures call pneumatophores. This ability is importa nt in times of low soil aeration. The leaves are covered with a waxy cuticle that helps retain water. In some species, the leaves are responsible for salt secretion, while others store excess salt in leaves until they fall off the tree. The mangrove species also have modified reproductive structures. Most seeds develop while still attached to the parent tree. This enhances their chance of survival. These seeds are also buoyant, which allows them to float to a less shady spot, away from the parent tree and start growing. In the beginning of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and Macbeth try their best to hide their conscience. Macbeth commands the stars to â€Å"hide your fires; / Let not light see my black and deep desires† (1.4.57-58). If the stars hide their light, Macbeth’s dark desires will be hidden and he will feel no guilt. Lady Macbeth speaks to the spirits and orders them to â€Å"unsex me here / And fill me . . .top-full / Of direst cruelty! Lady Macbeth calls the evil spirits to get rid of her female qualities, to make her a man, and to hide her conscience so she will feel no guilt. Macbeth feels so guilty he forgets to leave the daggers with the guards. He refuses to go back because he is â€Å"afraid to think what I have done; / Look on’t again I dare not† (2.2.65-66). Macbeth believes his conscience will never let this horrendous act go. He exclaims to Lady Macbeth, â€Å"Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood / Clean from my hand? Macbeth feels that all the oceans in the world will not wash away his dishonor for killing the king. On the other hand, Lady Macbeth does not feel any guilt. Inescapeabilty of the Horrors of the Civil War essays The destruction left by the Civil War was a time in American history that was necessary for the natural progression of human kind. While its horrors and often sanguinary tactics left the hearts of both Confederate and Union soldiers hollow, it was inevitable it its birth. The depths behind its unavoidance falls to the nations failure of compromises, its unsteady legs of a young nation, but most importantly it was the passions of the American people that brought the Civil War to life. Leading up to the events of the Civil War, that nations attempts at compromising show the almost impossible outcome of an acceptance in both the North and the South. Regarding the Compromise of 1850, the need to placate both the North and the South led to the outcome of neither truly gaining what they wanted. Angers still burned and resentment still existed despite the compromise, illustrating the growth that would have to continue to find a different solution: the Civil War. The weakness of compromises is displayed in the Kansas-Nebraska act, which basically ignored the Missouri Compromise of 1820. The later compromise had forbidden slavery north of the 36 30 line in which Douglas sought to change to popular sovereignty in the Kansas-Nebraska act. People, the North in particular, were left with a feeling of caution and unable to be comforted by a compromise when such a significant one had been so conveniently ignored. Compromising was not helping the people, and left them with li ttle else to turn to. The nations youth was another key factor in the lead in of the Civil War. There was no history for the nation to rely on and to support them in these difficult and trying times. They could not be comforted by the fact that they had survived so long and thus the reasoning for staying together was less powerful.
